Vaping has become so popular, we sometimes tend to forget that the technology behind it is nothing short of remarkable. In just ten years, we’ve watched vape hardware evolve from small, relatively weak e-cigarettes to massively powerful box mod devices and portable pod mods that allow us to enjoy a seriously potent amount of nicotine. These days, there is a massive variety of vaping system styles on the market, and each one provides users with a unique experience.
In order for us to enjoy our device, whether it be a super powerful sub-ohm mod or an incredibly slim pod mod, that device needs to have an adequate battery. After all, it’s the battery that allows the coil to reach a certain temperature so that our e-liquid can be turned into the perfect amount of thick, delicious vapor.
When it comes to the variety of devices out there, there are just as many different types of vape batteries. After all, each type of device requires its own unique battery configuration. Despite the fact that the battery is such a crucial component of a vaping setup, many of us don’t pay much attention to it. Perhaps this is because the battery that powers a device is one of the few things we can’t configure ourselves in order to customize our vaping experience based on our unique preferences.
However, recognizing how vape batteries differ from each other from device to device gives us a better understanding of how vaping technology works in general. This knowledge helps us choose the best battery for our device, and also helps us customize our setup in order to support the unique battery that it draws power from.
That’s why we’re going to discuss the three main types of vape batteries: pod mod batteries, box mod batteries and portable vaporizer batteries.
Why Do These Batteries Differ So Much?
Before we break down each unique type of battery, we have to explain why vape batteries can differ so much from each other. Each type of vaping system serves its own unique purpose. For instance, pod mods cater to those who want a strong amount of nicotine without a whole lot of vapor. Therefore, the batteries reflect the wattage level that this device should reach in order to provide that effect. Meanwhile, box mods are all about power. Users of these devices typically crave huge vape clouds that are extremely dense. In order to allow this to happen, a battery must be extremely powerful so that enough e-liquid can turn into vapor when the device is fired.
Pod Mod Batteries
First, let’s discuss pod mod batteries. Pod mods are relatively new on the vaping scene, but they’re quickly becoming a preferred vaping method because of the way in which they can deliver a strong blast of salt-based nicotine without being a huge, clunky and conspicuous device.
Pod mod batteries are typically built into the mod component, which is unique. This means that they don’t need to be physically removed and charged separately from their mod.
Pod mod batteries also have pretty low capacity levels compared to other types of vaping devices on the market. This is because they don’t need to reach extremely high wattage levels. The user can get their nicotine hit with just a little bit of vapor, and so a low-capacity battery works just fine.
However, it’s worth pointing out that as pod mods evolve, we’re seeing a large diversity of batteries that are used with these devices. Only two years ago, pod mods had batteries with capacities of around 300mAh. Now, we’re seeing pod mods that have battery capacities of up to 1100mAh. This is mainly because of the fact that a lot of today’s pod mods allow you to enjoy freebase nicotine e-liquid as well, and these types of e-liquids perform best when there’s a higher wattage level.
Portable Vaporizer Batteries
Portable vaporizers, like pod mods, tend to have batteries that are built into the mod, but some utilize batteries that are sold separately. Portable vaporizers can greatly vary in size and strength, which is why there’s no real set capacity range for this type. It goes without saying that the more powerful and the larger the vaporizer, the higher the capacity of the battery must be. However, it seems that the best-selling portable vaporizers of today utilize batteries with capacities between 500 and 750mAh.
Box Mod Batteries
Box mod batteries are extremely powerful. Most box mods require two batteries so that the device can operate at extremely high wattage levels. These devices must utilize a lot of power in order to create those high volumes of vapor with every pull. This is why box mod batteries have such high capacities.
In order to have a satisfying experience with a box mod, it’s recommended that each battery has a capacity of 2500mAh at least. That’s a whole lot of power! Additionally, box mod batteries are almost never built into the mod itself. They’re sold separately, and they must be physically removed from the box mod and charged on a conventional charging device.
Almost every box mod uses 18650, 20700, 21700 or 26650 batteries. Essentially, these numbers refer to the capacity. The higher the number, the more capacity your battery has, which means the longer it will last before it needs to be recharged, as well as how much power it can put into each hit.
It’s also important to point out that these vape batteries require a bit more maintenance. It’s recommended that they’re taken out of the mod regularly and carefully cleaned with a cotton swab. This is because excess e-liquid can get on them and interfere with the connections.
Some Final Notes
Whenever you are working with an electronic device, safety is very important. Many aspects of vaping are fully customizable, but when it comes to vape batteries, it’s critical that you are cautious. Never try to use an incompatible battery with your vaping device. Always make a point to replace your batteries fairly regularly when they start to lose the ability to hold a charge for the normal length of time.
Lastly, always remember that just like everything in vaping, quality matters. Your vape batteries are important, so don’t skimp on quality to save a buck.
So, as you can see, the world of vape batteries is as diverse as the world of e-liquids and the world of vaping devices. Which device you choose determines which type of battery you require. Now that you know how each battery is unique, you can better choose the right setup for your needs and enjoy your vaping experience to the fullest!
